Michelle Sutanto (Indonesian, b. 2000)
Michelle Sutanto has a passion for exploring the microcosm, which she then integrates her central concept into the subject of Pasar (the fresh market). Growing up in Indonesia and currently being an international student studying abroad, she often misses the exotic taste of Indonesian food and feels like the ingredients used for cooking Indonesian food are limited or not found anywhere outside of Indonesia. This feeling of longing for Indonesian food inspired her to create a body of work. In the search for similar ingredients, she portrays some of the ingredients she finds in the local fresh markets abroad as her artwork's main subject. The zoomed-in orientation of the ingredients appears dramatic and creates a sense of intimacy. What she depicts as realism turns into a form of abstraction, making the familiar seem unfamiliar. - 略歴・受賞Career / Prize
